The beautiful chapel of St. Vincent's-in-the-Vineyard originally stood at the Thompson Episcopal Retreat Center in St. Louis. When the land on which the chapel stood was sold, the chapel itself was scheduled for demolition, since the solid masonry construction on a concrete slab foundation made it impossible to move. Saddened by the prospect of losing this beautiful worship space, Hank Johnson, owner of Chaumette Vineyards and Winery, arranged with the Episcopal Bishop, the Right Reverend George Wayne Smith, to gut the existing structure, take the parts to Chaumette, and replicate the original as closely as possible. The Bishop agreed that he would then re-consecrate the chapel. In November of 2002 the deconstruction began. All the parts were transported to Chaumette Vineyard, where they were stored in the basement of the Tasting Room. Winter of 2003 saw Hank and Jackie Johnson scraping, priming, re-glazing windows, and preparing the various parts of their 'chapel kit' for reconstruction. And in March of 2003, a groundbreaking service was held on the future site of St. Vincent's, with the Bishop and several members of his staff conducting the beautiful service with roots in pre-reformation Christendom. Actual construction then began, and the Chapel was completed by the first of October. The Bishop and his staff returned and conducted a rare Service of Consecration on Sunday, October 5, 2003. Although regular Sunday services are in the Episcopal tradition, St. Vincent's continues to fulfill its original mission from The Thompson Center as an All-Faith's Chapel, to reach out to all faiths and provide a space of worship for all. In that spirit, in early 2007 a Buddhist congregation from St. Louis joined with practicing Buddhists from the Farmington area to hold services at St. Vincent's. This was the first of many services to be held by people of different faiths at St. Vincent's, which can easily be converted with the symbols of other faiths. |
